San Juan de la Maguana is a western province of the Dominican Republic, about an hour from the Haitian border. The largest of all the provinces, most of its land is dedicated to agriculture including grains, vegetables, and sugar cane.
The communities where Bridges works are rural and close-knit, with strong local leadership and a deeply shared vision for a better future. Volunteers live and work embedded in these communities for the full week.

El Yaque is home to multigenerational Dominican families bound by strong networks of mutual support. Women often lead households while contributing to agriculture. Young people balance school with family responsibilities, aspiring to education and opportunity.
Community gatherings around faith, farming, and local celebrations reinforce bonds that are as practical as they are cultural. This is a community with deep social capital.
Agriculture is the foundation of life in El Yaque. Families grow subsistence crops and some cultivate coffee for local markets. Access to buyers is limited by road conditions, especially during rainy season, and formal employment is scarce.
Many families live in homes without weatherproofing or durable roofing. A safe home is a transformative milestone.
Access to clean water and sanitation remains a challenge with direct implications for children's health.
Children attend local schools, but limited infrastructure and distance make higher education out of reach for many.
