Bridges to Community

OUR PROGRAMS

Help us make an impact

Bridges to Community engages in sustainable community development by forming long-term relationships with communities affected by poverty, listening and responding directly to the needs of the communities, and engaging volunteers to collaborate on meaningful projects in housing, education, health, and economic development.

MICROFINANCING & AGRICULTURE LOANS

Bridges to Community seeks to establish an agricultural loan fund that will provide low-interest, harvest-based loans to farming families in El Yaque, San Juan, who lack access to traditional credit. The fund will offer essential capital for seeds, tools, equipment, and technical assistance from a local agricultural engineer, with repayments structured around harvest cycles to ensure sustainability and continued support for other families. In addition to financial access, the program will deliver training and technical guidance to promote efficient, climate-resilient farming practices, crop diversification, and environmentally responsible technologies. By strengthening local agriculture, the initiative aims to increase household incomes, improve nutrition, create employment opportunities, and reduce migration driven by economic hardship and climate challenges.

EDUCATION

Bridges to Community proposes an integrated Youth Development, Education, and Environmental Leadership Program in the communities of Gajo Largo, Corocitos, and La Guama, supporting young adults who face financial and structural barriers to opportunity. Through a pilot scholarship initiative, select youth will receive comprehensive support to pursue locally available higher education or technical training in the San Juan province, covering essential costs and providing academic oversight, mentorship, community service, and cultural exchange with visiting North American volunteers—ensuring graduates return prepared to serve their communities and reduce regional brain drain. In parallel, BTC will form youth-led environmental brigades, empowering approximately 20 local young people as ecological promoters through environmental education, leadership training, and hands-on projects addressing urgent regional challenges such as drought, poor waste management, water access, and deforestation. These brigades will lead community workshops, organize cleanups, reforestation efforts, and water-related initiatives, and collaborate with schools, health posts, local government, and volunteers. Together, these efforts strengthen youth leadership, expand access to education, promote environmental resilience, and generate long-term social, economic, and environmental benefits for the entire community.

INFRASTRUCTURE & SANITATION

The Infrastructure & Sanitation Program supports families who do not require new home construction but need essential repairs to improve safety, hygiene, and overall living conditions. For these households, BTC provides targeted infrastructure improvements such as structural repairs, security enhancements, water filtration, and exterior painting, particularly when existing homes are larger than the BTC housing model. In addition, the program addresses critical sanitation needs, as many families lack a private or safe latrine, rely on deteriorated or shared facilities, and face increased health and environmental risks. Due to limited economic resources, these families are unable to build adequate sanitation systems on their own, so BTC constructs cinderblock bathroom units with a shower, hand sink, and septic tank, ensuring a dignified, hygienic, and sustainable solution that improves health, safety, and quality of life.
