Housing

Over the past ten years Bridges has built over seven hundred homes throughout Nicaragua. Most homes there lack a secure structure in case of earthquake, lockable doors and windows to prevent robberies, a tile floor (as opposed to dirt), and a roof without holes. Bridges homes are resistant to the strong sulfur gases from the local volcano because of the special roof material we use. The steel frame of the homes has been evaluated by engineers as earthquake resistant.

The impacts of a new home are many, and often immeasurable. Over 80% of new home owners report better health as a result of having a tiled floor and non-leaking roof, a greater sense of security from natural disasters and robberies due to the secure steal structure and window and doors, and greater economic and educational activities. In addition, nearly all home owners express that their self esteem and sense of pride as a family has been raised.

Program Goals:

  1. Increase sense of pride, self esteem and decrease stress among home owners and their families;
  2. Increase Security from robberies and natural disasters;
  3. Increase access to education;
  4. Improve family sanitation and health.
