Nicaragua Trip a Success-Thank you!!

April 6, 2010-Sent to Bridges by the mother of a high school student volunteer

My son, who began to clam up as soon as puberty hit, has talked more about this trip to Nicaragua in March than any other high school experience.  He, too, is talking about doing it again, and is re-searching his college acceptances to see which might have a similar program.

All of the things I thought might have turned him off - the bathing in a bucket, the non-stop diet of beans and rice, the heat - he just shrugged off.  He talked about the kids he met, his ability to make himself understood in Spanish, the humor of all the masons, the details of constructing a house with such limited materials, and the participation of the family they were building for.

If any trip truly teaches about being a contributing member of the global community, this is it.  I add my thanks to all who organized it, and who, with hard work and humor, inspired our young adults to become better citizens.
