Marvel Makes Tortillas

Marvel Del Socorro Sosa Arley, a tortilla maker from Guanacastillo, Nindiri, is one of the most recent beneficiaries of the Community Economic Development Program. With a small loan provided by Bridges To Community, Marvel was able to expand her business and increase production, which helped her pay back her loan through contributions to a community revolving fund for more community projects!

Always a hard worker, Marvel raised her four children with the help of her husband, Martin. Together they worked hard to provide their children with adequate nutrition and shelter. However, like most Nicaraguan families, their needs were barely being met. With her eldest sons working in an iron processing factory and herself waking up at 5:00 AM to make 120 corn tortillas that are sold by her youngest son before attending school; Marvel knew that she needed assistance to help her create better opportunities for the future of her family.

Today, on account of her patience and hard work, Marvel has expanded her production of tortillas and is able to better provide for her family's needs. Marvel recognizes that there are many challenges that lie ahead, but she remains focused on bettering the situation of her family. Her main goal is to work as hard as she can to educate her sons and to give them the tools necessary to lead better lives.
